Hopkins Toastmasters Meeting --Hopkins Toastmasters prepares individuals for formal and extemporaneous speeches. The group meets on the second Monday and fourth Tuesday of the month, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Toastmasters is a convenient and economical way to polish speaking skills before seminars or scientific presentations. The group is open to the entire Hopkins community; however, participation is limited to members who have paid a small dues (to cover cost of materials).

Spelman Travel Fellowship -- The Spelman Travel Fellowship is awarded annually to support graduate student travel in Italy to study works of art. Applicants should identify sites to be visited and works to be studied, indicating the importance of travel in Italy to the student s research and career development. The description should be no more than two pages in length. A short letter of support from the student s adviser should accompany the application.

All fellowship applications should be submitted by Monday, Dec. 4, to Elizabeth Cropper, director, Charles S. Singleton Center for Italian Studies, Villa Spelman, 268 Mergenthaler.

Weight Watchers at Work -- The Department of Occupational Health Services, in conjunction with the Office of Benefits Administration, is offering a Weight Watchers at Workı class on Wednesdays at noon or 1 p.m., beginning Dec. 6. Cost for the 10-week session is $80.

Postdoctoral Research Opportunities -- Hopkins' American Institute for Contemporary German Studies is continuing the Robert Bosch Foundation Research Scholars Program in Comparative Public Policy and Institutions.

Designed for postdoctoral scholars, the program offers two in-residence fellowships, one each from candidates working at American and German institutions, tenable at AICGS in Washington, D.C. Awards are usually given for periods of six months at stipends of $2,500 to $3,500 per month, based on seniority. In addition, there is a small budget for travel and research expenses.

Candidates are sought in political science, economics, business, sociology and interdisciplinary studies. Selections will be made on the basis of project proposals. Fellowships are open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents of the United States and German citizens. The Ph.D. is required.

Applications must include a summary (no more than seven pages) of the research project, including purpose, questions/hypotheses, methodology and relationship to traditional literature in the field; a curriculum vitae, including previous positions, publications, awards and honors; and three letters of recommendation, to accompany the application in sealed envelopes. Applicants must specify the six-month period for which they are seeking an award.

For July 2001 awards, the deadline is Feb. 13, 2001. July 1, 2001, is the deadline for applicants interested in the January-June 2002 period.

Butterball Turkey Program -- Provide Thanksgiving dinners to families in need by participating in the Butterball Turkey Program. Donations of $15 will purchase a Butterball gift certificate to help a needy family buy a turkey or other food items for the holiday.

Student Funding Programs -- Two programs are available through the Alumni Association. Both are open to undergraduate and graduate students from all divisions.

The Community Service Grant Program was established to support valuable volunteer experiences for Hopkins students and to foster positive relationships between the university and its surrounding communities. The program supports students who create their own community service projects or design their own ventures within existing volunteer organizations.

The Student Services Grant Program promotes the student experience at Hopkins by providing funding to student groups or programs and by supporting campus events, activities and programs that benefit and involve students from all university divisions.
