Not only did the 2001 Johns Hopkins United Way Campaign more than meet its overall goal of $2,080,000, but every university division exceeded its individual campaign goal, report the campaign leadership.

"Many people worked hard to make this campaign a success," said Richard McCarty, dean of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and chair of the university portion of the campaign.

To date, the combined contributions from those at the university, Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Applied Physics Laboratory total $2,159,396. Money raised at the School of Advanced International Studies is reported to the Washington Capital Area United Way Campaign.

Dec. 14 is the official last day for Hopkins pledges to be counted toward the overall United Way of Central Maryland Campaign's 2001 goal; pledges are welcome year-round, however.

McCarty said he is delighted that he was able to live up to his title of the Million-Dollar Dean. McCarty had set an ambitious $1 million campaign goal for the university, a $147,000 increase from the previous year's mark. Chief among those he'd like to credit for the success, he says, are "the Million Dollar Dean's Team in the Krieger School Dean's Office, the divisional coordinators and solicitors."

Of special note in this year's campaign, the School of Professional Studies in Business and Education exceeded its goal by 45 percent, raising $37,757, with 60 percent of personnel participating.

APL, whose effort was spearheaded by Mary Lasky, ended its campaign with $610,690, its largest total ever, and 11 percent above the goal.

Overall, Johns Hopkins institutions had more than 200 new leadership members, a designation for those who donate $1,000 or more.

Roger A. Johns, campaign chair for Johns Hopkins Medicine, said there was a "tremendous outpouring of compassionate giving during the 2001 United Way Campaign."

"While the final numbers are not in, it is clear that we will surpass our goal for the year by a significant margin," says Johns, chairman of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the School of Medicine. "I wish to thank all employees for their generosity and especially thank all of the volunteers who have worked so hard and devoted so much of their time to the campaign."
