Stars and Stripes Over Alumni House

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

The stars and stripes fly over Steinwald Alumni House, thanks to the generosity of Joseph Martin, associate director of Homewood Plant Operations.

"After the terrorist attacks, I wanted an American flag and called Plant Ops to see if there was an extra one available," says India Lowres, senior associate director of Alumni Relations. "But the university had only a ceremonial one, which couldn't be hung outside."

Undeterred, Martin provided a solution: He gave Lowres a flag that had belonged to his father, who fought in World War II. Martin, an apartment dweller, told Lowres he would like to have it flown.
