Trauma/Grief Support Groups -- Faculty and Staff Assistance Program counselors are running two weekly trauma/grief support groups on Fridays in response to the terrorist attacks. One will meet on the East Baltimore campus from noon to 1 p.m. in Suite 403, 550 Building. The other group will meet at Eastern High School, Suite C100 from noon to 1 p.m. To register, call Tovey Dixon at 410-955-1220; space is limited.

In addition, information tables will be set up in the Broadway Corridor at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions on Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The tables will have information and handouts on coping with trauma.


Nominations Invited -- The Committee on Honorary Degrees invites nominations from members of the Johns Hopkins community. Candidates should be individuals with a record of outstanding achievement in a field of human endeavor appropriate for recognition by the university, such as notable academic or public achievement in government, politics, commerce, service or the arts. A connection to the university is desirable.

Letters of nomination, accompanied by a curriculum vitae or biographical information, should be sent to Paula Burger, chair, Committee on Honorary Degrees, Office of the Provost, 265 Garland Hall, by Oct. 18.


Child Safety Seat Checks -- Have children's safety seats checked by certified child passenger safety technicians at the JHMI Child Safety Seat Check on Thursday, Oct. 11, from noon to 3:30 p.m. Checks are by appointment only. To make an appointment, call the Johns Hopkins Children's Safety Center at 410-614-5587. Safety Center staff will also be accepting appointments at their safety information booth on the concourse level at Johns Hopkins Hospital on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.


School of Nursing Open House -- The School of Nursing will host a fall open house on Saturday, Oct. 20, for students interested in undergraduate, master's, postmaster's, doctoral and certificate nursing programs. The open house will begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Anne M. Pinkard Building, 525 N. Wolfe St.

Academic program seminars will cover traditional undergraduate, accelerated undergraduate, RN to BS undergraduate, the BS to MSN program, the Business of Nursing certificate program as well as graduate programs: master's, postmaster's, PhD and DNSc. Representatives from faculty, admissions, financial aid, student body, U.S. military, U.S. Peace Corps, U.S. Public Health Service and ROTC will be available. Refreshments and tours of the School of Nursing building will be offered.

Flu Vaccines -- Flu vaccines will be offered free of charge to faculty and staff of the Homewood campus during the week of Oct. 24, in the Great Hall at Levering. The schedule is as follows: Tuesday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m.; Wednesday, Oct. 31, 7 to 10 a.m. and 2 to 4 p.m.; and Thursday, Nov. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon and 2 to 4 p.m.

Vaccines will also be administered through the month of November from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Office of Occupational Health Services, W-601 Wyman Park. Flu vaccines will also be offered at the East Baltimore campus. For times and location, call 410-955-6211.


Mentoring Network -- Johns Hopkins University students majoring in engineering, science or math can now sign up to be matched with mentors from companies such as AT&T, IBM, Ford Motor Co., Alcoa, Intel, the U.S. Department of Transportation, Hewlett Packard, Dupont, Texaco, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Microsoft Corp. and NASA Ames Research Center. Students can also apply to be matched with a mentor online at www.mentornet.net. The service is free of charge and the deadline for applying is Oct. 31.


Teach for America -- As part of its national recruitment efforts for the 2002 corps, Teach for America will hold an information session at Johns Hopkins on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 6 p.m. in the Career Center. The Teach for America corps involves a two-year commitment to teach in urban and rural public schools.
