A Home Renovated for Two

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

The paint is dry, the last light bulb screwed in. On Nov. 29, after seven months of renovation work, this two-story row house at 841 N. Washington St. was officially handed over to its new owners, Hoover and Carrie Whitaker (on the right).

The previously boarded-up, dilapidated structure in East Baltimore has a shiny new exterior and interior thanks to the efforts of 47 volunteers from Facilities Management at the School of Medicine and 18 private vendors. Pictured on the Whitakers' front step is John Grinnalds, senior director of Facilities Management, who was inspired by the university's 125 Ways of Caring Campaign to choreograph the renovation of this 80-year-old house, which had been purchased by Hopkins as part of a real estate deal. From the left, volunteers Johnny Mathews, Nanette Hector, Ernest Toney, Anthony Hardison and Reginald Thomas.
