Flea Market Keeps United Way Numbers Rising

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

The flea market that recently took over Homewood's Glass Pavilion was a first for the university's United Way campaign--and it's a good bet, organizers say, that it won't be the last.

The event, organized by Tina Pitts of the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, raised $2,294 for the United Way of Central Maryland, courtesy of six groups--the Peabody Institute, Academic and Cultural Centers, Homewood Student Affairs, JHU Press, University Administration, UA Human Resources and the Krieger School--whose employees sold items donated by their divisions, as well as an array of baked goods.

To cap off the day, A&S Dean Richard McCarty, university chair for the 2001 United Way campaign, drew the winning names for this year's lottery prizes.

Athletics director Tom Calder offers new lacrosse wear at bargain prices.

Myrta Byrum of JHU Press shows teapots big and small to students Pratima Lele and Katherine Cheung.

Kay Lutz of the Whiting School checks out some reading material.

Who Won What?
Donors' Names Drawn in 2001 Campaign Lottery

The following prizes were donated by local institutions and businesses to encourage pledges to the United Way. The winning names were drawn on Nov. 9; everyone whose bid of $35 or more was received by deadline was entered in the lottery. The university hopes that employees will continue to support the businesses whose generous contributions have helped Hopkins achieve its goal.
