Peter Newman, Professor Emeritus, Dies

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Peter Newman, professor emeritus of political economy who taught at Hopkins for 24 years and served for 12 years as chair of the Economics Department, has died in New Zealand at the age of 73.

The British native was editor or co-editor of three important encyclopedias of economics, including the four-volume, 4,195-page New Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, which was published in 1987 to great acclaim.

The Times of London has described Newman as an "academic economist who believed the history of the subject illuminates current practice" and said Newman brought "a touch of humor to his reference works."

Newman retired from Johns Hopkins in 1990.
