Portrait of a Surgeon General

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

An oil portrait of Antonia Novello, the first Latina surgeon general of the U.S., was unveiled on Oct. 9 in the Sherwood Room of Levering Hall, Homewood. The portrait joins that of Thurgood Marshall in a series of culturally diverse pieces being commissioned by Homewood Student Affairs. Novello was selected by the HSA diversity and community committee and OLE, the university's student organization that caters to, but is not exclusive to, Latin American and Hispanic cultures. Pictured are the artist, Nathaniel Gibbs; Novello; President William R. Brody; Susan Boswell, dean of student life, and Rose Gaskins, associate director of the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs. Novello, currently commissioner of the New York State Department of Health, is an alumna of the Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she was a visiting professor and special director for community health policy.
