Ways of Caring: As part of its anniversary celebration, the university is asking each of the 40,000 faculty and staff members to spend a day volunteering in a community project. Education is the theme for January's 125 Ways of Caring events. To get involved in these or other ongoing projects, or to set up your own, log on to http://www.jhu.edu/~125th/volunteer.
January, date TBD. 125 Ways of Caring event: House of Ruth. Ten volunteers are needed to renovate the administration building. Applied Physics Laboratory.
Through March. 125 Ways of Caring event: Giant's Apples for the Students 2000-2001: Adopt-a-School Program. Support Barclay Elementary School, near the Homewood campus, by collecting Giant receipts and depositing them in the collection box at Printing Services, located in the basement of Garland Hall, or send them via campus mail to Eden Blum, Evergreen House, 3rd floor. The contributions will allow the school to purchase much-needed computer and audio-visual equipment. University Administration.
Through May. 125 Ways of Caring event: Dr. Bernard Harris Elementary School/After-School Tutorial Program. The purpose is to enhance academic skills, particularly math, reading and language arts. Volunteers are needed to tutor students and to serve as mentors. JHHS, Corporate Services, Community Health & Services.
Through May. 125 Ways of Caring event: Dunbar/Hopkins Health Partnership. A school-to-career program that broadens and advances students' interest in and awareness of health care delivery professions, trends, opportunities and challenges. Provides work-based learning experiences that will enable and stimulate further study at the college level. Volunteers are needed to provide work experiences for students. Through May. 125 Ways of Caring event: JHM "Bond to Bond" Program. Collaborative partnership with community schools: Adopt-a-Class program with Tench Tilghman Elementary School, Career Development Youth Mentoring with Institute of Notre Dame Senior High School and Paul Dunbar Senior High School. Volunteers needed to mentor students; departments needed to adopt a class. Human Resources, University Administration.
Year-Round. 125 Ways of Caring event: Welfare to Work Grant. Provides education, job readiness and life skills training. Volunteers needed to serve as mentors. Human Resources, University Administration.
Year-Round. 125 Ways of Caring event: Baltimore Reads Books. Book drive. Applied Physics Laboratory.
Year-Round. 125 Ways of Caring event: Episcopal Social Ministries: Caroline Academy. Held at the Institute of Notre Dame school not far from the JHMI campus, this is an after-school program for children of mothers enrolled in the Caroline Center, which trains women for jobs. JHU/JHH.
