Sunday Symposium Will Look at Ethical Issues in Genetic Testing

Moral questions raised by advances in prenatal genetic testing will be the topic of a Sunday afternoon symposium called "The Brave New World of Molecular Medicine: Ethical Issues in Genetic Testing."

Presented by three of the Advanced Academic Programs in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences--master of liberal arts, master of science in biotechnology and postbaccalaureate premedical--the event will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on April 7 in Schafler Auditorium in the Bloomberg Center for Physics and Astronomy, Homewood campus.

The program will examine how emerging genetic technologies, medicine and ethics can come together. Panelists are Debra Birenbaum of the FDAšs Center for Drug Evaluation and Research; Hilary Bok, an associate professor of ethics and moral political theory in the Krieger Schoolšs Philosophy Department; Clair A. Francomano, senior investigator at the National Institute on Aging; Gail Geller, associate professor at the School of Medicinešs Institute of Genetic Medicine; and Stephen Vicchio, professor of philosophy at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland, executive director of the Institute of Public Philosophy in Baltimore and a faculty member in the Hopkins Biotechnology Program.

Preceding the event, from 2 to 3 p.m., students interested in the liberal arts, biotechnology or postbaccalaureate premedical programs may attend an information session with program representatives and alumni. A reception will follow the symposium.
