Animator/Story Artist to Speak at Digital Media Center on Friday

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Kevin Kaliher, a Hopkins alumnus who has worked since 1996 as an animator and story artist for Cartoon Network, will discuss storyboarding and show examples of his work at a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 5, in the Digital Media Center at Homewood's Mattin Center.

Kaliher has written and drawn storyboards for numerous shows on the Cartoon Network, including Dexter's Laboratory and The Powerpuff Girls. Last summer, the network broadcast "A Kitty Bobo Show," a seven-minute animated pilot he created and directed.

Kaliher graduated from Hopkins in 1990 with a bachelor of arts in humanistic studies. He studied drawing and cartooning with Homewood Art Workshops instructors Craig Hankin and Tom Chalkley and then went on to study animation and film at Columbia College in Chicago and character animation at California Institute of the Arts.

At Spike and Mike's in La Jolla, Calif., he created and directed "Home, Honey, I'm High," a three-minute film that was part of a traveling animation festival, and at DreamWorks Interactive, he directed production of the artwork for "Someone's in the Kitchen," a CD-ROM game. In 2001, the Entertainment Industries Council presented Kaliher with a PRISM award for "Mojo Jonesin"," a Powerpuff Girls episode that addressed substance abuse in a format children could understand.

The Digital Media Center is in suite 226 of the Offit Building. This event is jointly sponsored by the Homewood Art Workshops, the Digital Media Center and Homewood Arts Programs. For more information, contact Joan Freedman, Digital Media Center director, at freedman@jhu .edu or Craig Hankin, Homewood Art Workshops director, at chankin@jhu.edu.
