EVENTS

Thurs., Jan. 10, 6 p.m. "Birch's Views of Philadelphia Revisited," a lecture by S. Robert Teitelman, author of Birch's Views of Philadelphia, 200th Anniversary Edition. A book signing by the author and wine and cheese reception will be held at Homewood House following the lecture. $12, $10 for Homewood House members. HW

With Views of Philadelphia ... as it appeared in the year 1800--a collection of engraved prints by William Russell Birch and his son, Thomas Birch--Homewood House introduces its first Focus Show, designed to highlight the museum's permanent holdings. The exhibit opened last week and continues through Feb. 28.

The Birches emigrated from England in 1794 and settled in Philadelphia, where they created an illustrative record of city life and architecture. A total of 27 engravings were made available to subscribers, who included Marylanders Charles Carroll of Homewood, Charles Carroll of Carrollton and Alexander Brown Jr.

Programs accompanying the exhibit include this week's lecture, "Birch's Views of Philadelphia Revisited" (see Special Events), and future talks on printmaking techniques, the marketing of prints, and framing and hanging conventions of the early 19th century.
