Homewood Changing Authorization Codes for Long-Distance Phone Calls

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

The Homewood campus telephone system enables extension lines to be restricted so that long-distance calls can be placed only if the caller inputs a valid authorization code. Currently, codes are sequentially assigned four-digit numbers.

Due to the increase in code users and the ease with which these codes can be compromised, Telecommunications will convert all codes to random seven-digit numbers like those used at other Hopkins locations. This change will be effective Aug. 1. Calls placed using an authorization code will continue to be billed to the budget number to which it is assigned when issued.

A mailing in July will provide the new codes to departmental administrators for distribution to the appropriate telephone users. To add or delete codes from a list of users, contact Jane Mixter at jmixter@jhu.edu or by fax at 410-516-5200.
