Chip Mason Elected 14th Head of University Board of Trustees

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Raymond A. "Chip" Mason, chairman, president and CEO of Legg Mason Inc. and a trustee of The Johns Hopkins University since 1987, was elected the 14th chair of the university's board of trustees at the board's annual meeting.

Mason, who is also a trustee of Johns Hopkins Medicine, had served as chair-elect for the past year. As chair, he succeeds Michael R. Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, whose six-year term as chair concluded at the May 5 annual meeting.

William R. Brody, president of the university, said that Mason--as a trustee of both the university and Johns Hopkins Medicine, and as a leader and executive committee member on both boards--has been an important force in the evolution of the institutions' unified leadership over the past decade. Mason has chaired both the university board's Investment Committee and JHM's Finance Committee.

"He brings to the chairmanship of the university board a steady hand, dedication to Hopkins and an intimate knowledge of both the university and Johns Hopkins Medicine," Brody said. "His guidance will be critical as we begin a fund-raising campaign to position Johns Hopkins for continued global impact in health and medicine, science and engineering, and the arts and humanities."

Mason founded Mason and Co. in 1962 and has spent his career building the financial services organization Legg Mason Inc., which now has assets under management of $177 billion. He was chairman of the Securities Industry Association in 1986, chairman of the board of governors of the National Association of Securities Dealers in 1974 and 1975 and chairman of the Regional Firms Committee of the New York Stock Exchange from 1983 to 1988. Since 1995, he has chaired the Maryland Business Roundtable for Education. He chaired the Greater Baltimore Committee from 1988 to 1990 and is a past board member of the Baltimore Museum of Art and National Aquarium in Baltimore and chaired the 1985 United Way of Central Maryland Campaign.

Three trustees were elected as vice chairs of the board. They are:

Lenox D. Baker Jr., of Norfolk, Va. Baker will serve as vice chairman of the university board ex officio, as chair of the board of trustees of Johns Hopkins Medicine. Baker is a cardiothoracic surgeon and a founding partner in Mid-Atlantic Cardiothoracic Surgeons Ltd. He is a 1963 graduate of Johns Hopkins and a 1966 graduate of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. He has been a trustee of the university since 1993.

Ernest A. Bates Jr., of San Francisco. Bates is a neurosurgeon and chairman and CEO of American Shared Hospital Services and GK Financing LLC. He is a 1958 graduate of Johns Hopkins and has been a trustee of the university since 1988.

George L. Bunting Jr., of Baltimore. Bunting is president of the Bunting Management Group and former chairman of Noxell Corp. He is one of the co-chairs of The Johns Hopkins Campaign: Knowledge for the World, the fund-raising campaign launched publicly this month. He has been a university trustee since 1985.
