Wild About Harry

Wizards were at work last week on the Homewood campus as the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences' Office of Academic Advising magically turned into the world of Harry Potter on Halloween morning.

Upon entering the office, students consulted the Hopkins sorting hat to determine which adviser/consultant they should see — among them, Professor Sprout (Sydney Green), Hermione Granger (Kathie Sindt), Ginny Weasly (Karen Desser), Professor Trelawney (Angela Ruddle), Madam Pomfrey (Barbara Flint), Molly Weasley (Martha Roseman), Hagrid (Richard Sanders), Professor McGonagall (Ruth Aranow) or, of course, Harry Potter (who uses the name John Bader when he wants to be incognito).

On the way, they passed through Diagon Alley, a row of shops designed and painted by graduate student assistant Karen Meyers and built by the woodworking duo of Dennis Gutowski and Dave Miller from Plant Operations. Journeying visitors encountered student workers Luna Lovegood, Cho Chang, Angelina Johnson and Fleur Delacoeur.

Students who failed to sign in were sentenced by Rita Skeeter (Pat Powers) to two semesters of academic probation, to be served in Azkaban.

In the Great Hall and Diagon Alley, candies spilled from pumpkins, including Bertie Bott's every flavor beans (ear wax, anyone?) for the more adventurous wizards and Kit-Kats, candy corn and Hershey's for the more cautious. Levering elves were enlisted to prepare a feast for an open house, held from noon to 2 p.m. under four house banners in the Great Hall.
