Remembering Mr. Hopkins

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Johns Hopkins, the Baltimore merchant whose will left $7 million to establish the university and hospital that bear his name, was remembered at a quiet graveside ceremony on Dec. 24 at Green Mount Cemetary. Among those paying their respects to Hopkins, who died on the morning of Christmas Eve in 1873, were descendants and appreciative employees of the two institutions created by what was then the nation's largest philanthropic bequest. Above, Jim Hopkins, a great-great nephew of the benefactor, and Jim Merlihan, of the Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, mark the simple grave with a wreath.
