A Rite of Summer

The JHU family gathers for a big cookout, games and a rollicking good time

Johns Hopkins Gazette Online Edition

Deans were dunked, hot dogs devoured, faces painted and the evening danced away at the 2003 Johns Hopkins picnic, held this year on June 26 on the Evergreen House meadow.

The annual summer event drew hundreds of JHU staff, faculty, students and their families on one of the season's first hot days. Intended for both old and young, the picnic featured games, rides, clowns, a dunking booth, a DJ and dance floor, and a bounty of flame-cooked food served up by "celebrity grillers," aka top administrators.

All wet: Jim Zeller in the dunking booth.

John Bader and Bill Leslie (rear) wind up.

A perennial favorite: The Balloon Dude.

Baltimore Ravens fans smile for the birdie.

Cooling off: Meg Sonneborn samples a slice of watermelon.

Winston Tabb gets cooking.

Ray Gillian flips his burgers.
