The fourth International Conference on Music
Information Retrieval, held in Baltimore from Oct. 26 to
30, was sponsored by Johns Hopkins'
Sheridan
Libraries and the Library of Congress. The conference
drew participants from 18 countries.
This annual conference is the first established
international forum for the diverse communities involved in
music information retrieval.
"This year's conference provided an opportunity for
computer music specialists and members of the archival,
library and museum communities to explore the complex
issues related to the tremendous growth of music-related
data," said
Winston Tabb, dean of university libraries at Johns
Hopkins.
The Institute for Museum and Library Services, the
National Science Foundation, the Lester S. & Eleanor K.
Levy Philanthropic Fund, the Gottesman Fund and the Arnall
and Ellen Patz Fund generously supported this
conference.
The Lester S. Levy Collection of Sheet Music is part
of Special Collections at Johns Hopkins' Sheridan
Libraries. It contains more than 29,000 pieces of music and
focuses on popular American music spanning the period 1780
to 1960.
