Diversity Recognition Awards held May 6

On May 6, the university held its first Diversity Recognition Awards ceremony. The Diversity Leadership Council established the awards to honor faculty, staff and students for their efforts to foster greater appreciation, advancement and celebration of diversity and inclusiveness at JHU.

The inaugural recipients are medical student Mazen Ibraihim Bedri, a leader in the Middle Eastern Students Association; Jacquelyn Campbell, associate dean in the School of Nursing, who spearheaded the recruitment of key minority faculty members; Victor Corces, chair of the Department of Biology, who has been instrumental in increasing the number of underrepresented minorities in the biology Ph.D. program; Maria Izquierdo-Whitaker, assistant director of financial aid in SPSBE, who was recognized for her efforts in promoting diversity at SPSBE and on a national level; Sharon Morris, a librarian in MSEL, who has made numerous contributions to improving diversity within the libraries and the university; Allison Okamura, a professor in Mechanical Engineering, who works to increase the number of women, minorities and people with disabilities in engineering; Chirag Patel, a master's student in BME, who is active in Students Educating and Empowering for Diversity and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs; and Myron Weisfeldt, chair of the Department of Medicine, who established the first Department of Medicine Diversity Council.
