The Shriver Hall Concert Series opens its 38th season
this week with a pairing of acclaimed artists — the
Emerson String Quartet and clarinetist David Shifrin
— in a program of Mozart and Brahms.
Known for its insightful performances, brilliant
artistry and technical mastery, the Emerson String Quartet
is one of the world's foremost chamber ensembles. Its
impressive list of achievements includes six Grammy awards
(with two unprecedented honors for best classical album)
and performances of the complete cycles of the Bartok,
Beethoven and Shosta-kovich string quartets in the major
concert halls of the world. The ensemble is lauded globally
for approaching both classical and contemporary repertoire
with equal mastery and enthusiasm.
The San Francisco Chronicle has called David Shifrin's
playing "a revelation in just how beautifully the clarinet
can be played." One of only two wind players (both
clarinetists) who have received the Avery Fisher Prize
since the award's inception in 1974, Shifrin is in constant
demand as an orchestral soloist, recitalist and chamber
music collaborator.
The program takes place at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, Sept.
21, in Homewood's Shriver Hall. For ticket information, go
