Wednesday Noon Series Begins with Indian
Dance
|
Dancer Sudha Bhagwat will open the Spring 2004
Wednesday Noon Series on Feb. 4 with a performance called
"India: Its Culture, Costumes and Classical Dance."
Presented by the Johns Hopkins
Office of Special Events, the Wednesday Noon Series is
now in its 38th season of cultural programming on the
Homewood campus. All events in the series are held on
Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m. in Shriver Hall.
Immersed in the ornately textured music of the sitar,
Bhagwat brings the mystery and majesty of India's
traditional dances to the stage. She has performed around
the globe as a solo artist and in ensembles, appearing at
the Kennedy Center, Shakespeare Theater, New York City
Opera, embassies and schools, and collaborated with famed
cellist Yo-Yo Ma on his 2002 Silk Road Project. Other
events this month in the Wednesday Noon Series are "How I
Wrote This Story," Feb. 11, a panel discussion by Jean
McGarry, Stephen Dixon and Tristan Davies, all Writing
Seminars faculty and JHU Press authors, moderated by Andy
Bienstock of WYPR; "Acoustic Urban Blues," Feb. 18, a
performance by Chic Street Man in observance of Black
History Month; and "Maryland Basketball: Tales from Cole
Field House," Feb. 25, a lecture by Paul McMullen, sports
writer for The Sun and author of the JHU Press book by the
same name.
