Charles Commons Under Way

Like John Mellencamp would say, walls came a-tumbling down last week on the future site of Charles Commons, a mixed-use complex adjacent to the Homewood campus that will feature student housing and a full-service Barnes & Noble bookstore. Beginning a two-month period of demolition, large excavating cranes tore into the site's existing structures, including a university-owned house and Ivy Hall on East 33rd Street and the Homewood Garage on St. Paul Street. Foundation work on Charles Commons will begin in late October. The facility is scheduled for completion by summer 2006.
