Johns Hopkins diplomas will send 5,819 alums on their next adventures


Barkha Gurbani discovered public health as a freshman and will use her Fulbright Scholar grant to spend a year doing research in India en route to medical school.

Like many of her classmates, Barkha Gurbani entered her freshman year with her sights set on a career in medicine. Four years later, she still wants to be a doctor, but now her heart is set on a slightly different path — a career in public health. Gurbani's focus shifted from her anticipated major, neuroscience, during her freshman year after learning about the Krieger School's public health studies program.

Off to India, Malaysia, Egypt and more
Earlier this month, nine students at Johns Hopkins learned they will be headed abroad for the 2004-2005 academic year, thanks to two prestigious awards administered by the Institute of International Education. Three undergraduates and four graduate students received Fulbright Scholar grants that will take them to locales including India, Malaysia, Egypt and Germany.

Ceremonies put cap on 128th year
The Latin root of the word confer, conferre, means "to bring together." On Thursday morning, President William R. Brody will once again recognize the true meaning of this source term when he confers degrees and certificates on 5,819 graduating scholars, literally bringing together all the university's divisions for a single celebration of scholarship, a journey's end and everything Johns Hopkins.
