The university recognized 250 staff members celebrating milestone anniversaries of 20 or more years of service, as well as 70 staff members retiring during the 2004 fiscal year, with a banquet and awards ceremony on Tuesday evening, June 15, in the Robert Scott Gymnasium at Homewood's O'Connor Recreation Center. With its floor covered and walls draped, tables elaborately set and a classical string duo performing, the room was transformed for the occasion.

Following the dinner, President William R. Brody presented service awards to each honoree. Staff members celebrating anniversaries of 20, 25, 30, 35 or 40 years of service received a variety of awards, many commissioned specifically for the recognition program. Among them were a limited edition, hand-made paper sculpture of the face of Johns Hopkins; a framed certificate featuring a specially commissioned bronze relief medallion combining symbols of all the Johns Hopkins divisions in its design and a hand-painted decorative platter with a reproduction of the round Johns Hopkins seal seen in Gilman Hall's stained glass window. A new gift offered this year for those with 35 or more years of service was a lead crystal vase set in a wood base with a personalized engraved plaque.

Retiring staff members received framed certificates of appreciation, and those retiring with 25 or more years of service had a choice of a Johns Hopkins rocking chair or captain's chair, or a framed certificate with a bronze commemorative medallion.

About 315 staff members, guests and university VIPs attended the dinner, the highest attendance on record. Among the retirees honored was Sidney Green, a well-loved custodial supervisor who worked for the university for 47 years, the longest service of any retiree this year. He was often in charge of board of trustees events.

The Human Resources Office of Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs is responsible for the university's staff recognition program. More information on the program is available at www.jhu.edu/hr/fsrp or by calling Sandy Cobb or Matt Smith at 410-516-6060.
