The Middle States Commission on Higher Education's
evaluation team visited Johns Hopkins last week for a
series of formal and informal meetings with senior
administration, faculty and students. The 14-member site
team, chaired by Brown University President Ruth Simmons,
was here to assess Johns Hopkins' undergraduate programs as
part of the university's reaccredidation process, which
occurs every 10 years. The verdict? We'll have to wait for
the official report, due in June. That's when Middle States
will present its formal conclusions and any possible
recommendations and inform the university of its
accreditation status.
Paula Burger, chair of the accreditation steering
committee, said that Simmons' oral presentation of the
findings was quite positive. "The team acknowledged the
culture of excellence at Hopkins and the energy and
commitment being directed to undergraduate education,"
Burger said.
Ruth Simmons, president of Brown
University, and Janet Smith-Dickerson, vice president for
campus life at Princeton, meet with undergraduates at
Homewood.
