Postdoc Fellowships in the Humanities

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Program in the Humanities invites applications for three fellowships. Appointments are for one year, beginning July 1, 2006, and are renewable for a second year.

This new postdoctoral program in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences will encourage innovative teaching, enrich educational and research opportunities in the humanities and foster the career development of a select group of promising young scholars. The committee will select fellows based primarily on applicants' scholarship and promise, as well as their abilities to fill research and teaching needs within the school's humanities departments.

Each fellowship carries a departmental affiliation and the responsibility of teaching one course per semester. The initial stipend is $45,000, with an additional $1,000 available for research and travel expenses. Health insurance and a onetime moving allowance of $1,500 are also provided.

Applicants should have completed their doctorate in any humanities discipline no earlier than June 30, 2002. To apply, send a letter of interest, a CV, three letters of recommendation and an academic statement, including research and teaching proposals, to the Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship Committee, 237 Mergenthaler Hall, on the Homewood campus.

Cancer Research Grants

The American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant program provides seed money for the initiation of promising new projects by independent junior investigators so they may obtain preliminary results that will enable them to compete successfully for national research grants. Grants are for one year and cannot exceed $20,000 (direct costs only); the grants are primarily for research supplies and technical services.

Senior investigators, postdoctoral fellows and junior investigators who have competitive national research grants or who have received prior support from the IRG are not eligible. Applications will be accepted only from full-time, tenure-track JHU faculty members at the ranks of instructor and assistant professor or equivalent who are within eight years of their first independent research or faculty appointment.

Relevance to the cancer problem is important and must be well-documented. Research areas can include basic research, clinical research, cancer control, health services, psychosocial and behavioral, preclinical (clinically relevant, e.g., applicable to prevention, diagnosis, etc.), epidemiological research or health policy and outcomes research.

Applications must be received no later than 5 p.m. on March 1. Submit an original and 11 copies to Grace Bigelow, Research Projects Administration, Suite W400, Wyman Park Building. Awards will be announced in April with a July 1, 2006, start date.

 

Nominations Wanted for MLK Awards

The Johns Hopkins Institutions announce the call for nominations for the 2005 Martin Luther King Jr. Award for Community Service. This award recognizes outstanding commitment to volunteer community service by faculty, staff, employees, graduate students and retirees.

The award will be presented to those who demonstrate the same spirit of volunteerism and citizenship that characterized King's life. Winners will be honored in January at the 14th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration Ceremony. The celebration will also feature nationally known keynote speakers whose work honors and supports King's memory.
