Estelle Fishbein, longtime general counsel of the university, was honored last week with the Alumni Association's Heritage Award, which recognizes alumni and friends of Johns Hopkins who have contributed outstanding service over an extended period to the progress of the university or the activities of the Alumni Association.

Fishbein joined Johns Hopkins in 1975 as its first general counsel and retired as vice president and general counsel in 2003, overseeing an office that had grown from two to seven attorneys. During her tenure, Fishbein carried the university through an era of monumental change in terms of legal rights and laws that affected it, including civil rights, Title 9, animal use in testing, human subjects, health and safety, and HIPAA.

President William R. Brody presented Fishbein with the award at an event held Sept. 15 at the Johns Hopkins Club.

Among the guests were the honoree's husband, Ronald Fishbein, associate professor emeritus of surgery in the School of Medicine and assistant dean for preprofessional advising for the Homewood schools; Nick Jones, dean of Engineering; Adam Falk, acting dean of Arts and Sciences; Ross Jones, vice president and secretary emeritus; Stanley Gabor, dean emeritus of SPSBE; Robert Pierce, former director of Peabody; Al Sommer, professor and former dean of Public Health; and Richard McCarty, dean emeritus of Arts and Sciences. Trustees included Benjamin Griswold IV, Harvey Meyerhoff, Andrew Bozzelli and Pierce Linaweaver.
