Contributions of Long-term Staff, Retirees Recognized at
Banquet
By John Black Faculty, Staff and Retiree
Programs
A groundbreaking physician who mentored future
generations of African-American doctors and advocated for
better minority health care, a first-generation immigrant
whose Johns Hopkins career made it possible to put his
children through college and a staff member who organized
weekly women's nights out for her colleagues — these
are just a few of the more than 300 people recognized by
Johns Hopkins at a dinner on June 7. The
Office of
Faculty, Staff and Retiree Programs organizes the
annual event to honor staff contributions to the
university, the workplace and society as they retire or
mark 20 or more years of service.
With a classical string duo playing in the background,
honorees and their guests gathered in the Robert Scott
Gymnasium of Homewood's O'Connor Recreation Center, first
for a cocktail reception and later to be feted with a
formal dinner and awards presentation. With floor covered,
walls draped and tables elaborately set, the room was
transformed into an elegant banquet hall.
Following the dinner, President William R. Brody
congratulated and presented service awards to each honoree.
Staff members celebrating anniversaries of 20, 25, 30, 35
and 40 years received a variety of awards, all commissioned
specifically for the recognition program. Among them: a
framed, handmade paper sculpture of Johns Hopkins, a
decorative platter hand painted with the Johns Hopkins seal
seen in the historic stained glass window in Gilman Hall
and a lead crystal vase set in a wood base with a
personalized engraved plaque. Staff with 38 or more years
of service were also recognized for their contributions.
Retiring staff members received framed certificates of
appreciation, and those retiring with 25 or more years of
service had a choice of a Johns Hopkins rocking chair or
captain's chair, or a framed certificate with a bronze
commemorative medallion. Among the retirees honored were
Estelle Fishbein, legal counsel for the university for 38
years; John Hodous, a biophysical researcher for 27 years;
and Elizabeth Washington, who, with 35 years on the job in
custodial services, worked in the School of Medicine Dean's
Office.
