Gerard H. Schlimm, an engineering lecturer and
administrator from 1966 to 1994, died Oct. 21 of
Alzheimer's disease in Lancaster, Pa. He was 76.
Schlimm joined Johns Hopkins in 1966 as director of
the Division of Engineering and Physical Sciences in what
was then known as the Evening College. He held that
position until 1983, when he became director of Part-Time
Undergraduate Programs and Special Programs in the
School of
Engineering. He served as a senior lecturer from 1988
to 1994 and as program chair for Undergraduate Civil and
Mechanical Engineering from 1992 to 1994, when he
retired.
The 1992-93 catalog for the Part-Time Programs in
Engineering and Applied Science featured Schlimm on its
cover.
"He was strongly committed to providing engineering
education opportunities for part-time students," said James
L. Teesdale, director of the APL Education Center and a
former colleague.
According to The Baltimore Sun, Schlimm also
taught at the University of Maryland and the Naval
Academy.
A civil engineering graduate of the University of
Maryland, College Park, Schlimm received a master's degree
from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and his
doctorate from Maryland.
Survivors include his wife, the former Janice
Althouse; three sons; and five grandchildren. Five brothers
and four sisters also survive him. Funeral services were
held Oct. 28 in Lancaster.
