Schlimm joined Johns Hopkins in 1966 as director of the Division of Engineering and Physical Sciences in what was then known as the Evening College. He held that position until 1983, when he became director of Part-Time Undergraduate Programs and Special Programs in the School of Engineering. The 1992-93 catalog for the Part-Time Programs in Engineering and Applied Science featured Schlimm on its cover.

"He was strongly committed to providing engineering education opportunities for part-time students," said James L. Teesdale, director of the APL Education Center and a former colleague.

According to The Baltimore Sun, Schlimm also taught at the University of Maryland and the Naval Academy.

A civil engineering graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, Schlimm received a master's degree from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and his doctorate from Maryland.
