Provost Addresses U.S. Senate Subcommittee on
Competitiveness
Steven Knapp, provost and senior vice president for
academic affairs, journeyed last Wednesday to Washington,
D.C., where he testified in front of the Senate
Subcommittee on Technology, Innovation and
Competitiveness.
In his remarks, Knapp urged the government to support
initiatives that strengthen American competitiveness, among
them reversing the trend of declining funding for basic
research, which leads to practical applications; investing
in research universities, whose technology licenses and
patents yield economic benefits as well as knowledge;
improving the cumbersome visa process that hinders
international intellectual exchange; and repairing the
country's faltering K-12 education system, which also leads
to weakness at the postsecondary level.
