Peabody's Ray Sprenkle to Lecture on 'The Glory of the
Piano'
The
Shriver Hall Concert Series celebrates its 40th
anniversary next month with three days of nonstop,
star-studded piano performances and related activities. To
set the stage for the April 7 to April 9 Piano Celebration,
the Peabody
Institute's Ray Sprenkle — noted composer,
historian and lecturer — will give a series of three
talks celebrating "The Glory of the Piano," which, he says,
"is not only the instrument itself but the literature that
composers have created for the piano through the ages."
The first talk, on Tuesday, March 14, concentrates on
the Viennese school and the sonata: Haydn, Mozart,
Beethoven and Schubert. The second, on Tuesday, March 21,
concentrates on the Romantic "miniature": Schumann, Chopin,
Liszt and Brahms. The last, on Monday, March 27, will focus
on the piano of the last hundred years, from Debussy to the
synthesizer.
All talks take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the
auditorium of the Steven Muller Building, Homewood campus.
Reservations are suggested; call 410-516-7164. Free parking
