New Take On a Classic

The game is still played with a ball and a stick, but this is not your grandfather's lacrosse. To offer a quintessential look at the modern game, the Johns Hopkins University Press has updated the Bob Scott classic Lacrosse, a book that for 30 years has been the ultimate guide to the "fastest game on two feet."

In this updated edition, just hitting the bookstore shelves, current Johns Hopkins men's lacrosse coach Dave Pietramala and Neil Grauer, a JHU graduate and veteran writer on the sport, have reworked every chapter, modernizing sections on rules, equipment, preparation and tactics. The two revisit topics such as drills and skills for specific positions, game strategy, clearing tactics and the history of the game itself — including a section on Johns Hopkins' contributions to lacrosse. New diagrams and images help to clarify concepts and instructions in the text. In addition, action and instructional photos by Hopkins photographer James "Jay" VanRensselaer capture some of the drama from the 2005 championship year and accompany the teaching chapters.

Bob Scott was the head coach of the Blue Jays men's lacrosse team from 1955 to 1974, winning seven national championships during that time. For the next 20 years, Scott served as the university's athletic director. He retired from JHU in 1995.
