April 17 was a great day for Johns Hopkins, the city
of Baltimore and the state of Maryland as the ceremonial
shovels hit dirt for the groundbreaking of the first
building in what will be known as the Science and
Technology Park at Johns Hopkins.
The mixed-use development project, just north of the
medical campus, is part of the East Baltimore Development
Initiative, an 80-acre, $850 million redevelopment effort
four years in the making. Among the hundreds on hand to
launch the life sciences park were Gov. Robert Ehrlich,
Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Mayor Martin O'Malley, Rep. Elijah
Cummings, JHU President William R. Brody, SoM Dean Edward
Miller and representatives of the development team, the
Forest City-New East Baltimore Partnership. The building,
scheduled to open at 855 N. Wolfe St. in early 2008, has
been named the John G. Rangos Sr. Building to recognize a
$10 million gift to the Institute for Basic Biomedical
Sciences at Johns Hopkins, a lead tenant.
