With Homewood's Garland Field under construction, the
sights, sounds and delicious smells associated with
Spring Fair
had to find new homes this year. But, like pied pipers,
they brought out the crowds, who followed them to their
roosts on the freshman quad, Keyser Quad, the Beach and
near Whitehead Hall. As in past years, the 35th annual
student-run fair opened at noon on Friday, and faculty,
staff and students were on hand to check out the craft
vendors and carnival rides and to dig into the grilled
sausages, funnel cakes, fried dough and smoothies. Also
planned for the three-day event — which typically
draws 100,000 visitors from all over the area — were
a Dr. Seuss-themed children's section, a photography
contest, daytime entertainment on two stages, a beer
garden and a Saturday night performance by the punk-pop
band Brand New.
