Applications Now Available to Students for 2006
PURAs
Last year, one winner of a Provost's
Undergraduate Research Award used her funding to study
19th-century American iron truss bridges to determine
whether they fit the definition of structural art. Another
conducted epidemiological studies in a remote Indian
village. Yet another headed to the Shetland Isles to
explore Scottish folk music.
This year, another group of undergraduates in the
schools of Arts and Sciences, Engineering and Nursing and
in the Peabody Conservatory will have the opportunity to
conduct original research, guided by a faculty sponsor,
through the PURA program. The maximum amount of the awards
is $3,000, which can be used to defray costs associated
with the project, such as expendable supplies and related
travel.
Students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit
proposals; sponsors must be full-time faculty but can be
from any division of the university. Applications are now
available from the office of Theodore Poehler, vice provost
for research, at 265 Garland Hall, Homewood campus, or by
phone at 410-516-8671. Summer 2006 proposals are due by
noon on Monday, March 20.
