Parking-rate changes announced for Homewood and Eastern

New parking rates will go into effect on July 1 for parking lots and garages on the Homewood and Eastern campuses. All surface lots will be $47 a month, and faculty hangtag parking will be $74 a month. The San Martin garage general parking will be $70 a month, with daily parking available for $8 a day. Reserved spaces will be $90 a month in the San Martin garage and $100 in the West Gate garage. Ellerslie satellite parking will remain at $30 a month, a rate established a year ago.

Departments that would like visitor passes can purchase them from the Parking and Transportation Office for $8 each. These consist of vouchers for the San Martin garage and purple hangtags that are valid at the Stony Run visitor lot and the north visitor metered lot. For those who would like to change their current parking choice, available options are the San Martin garage (reserved and general) and the Ellerslie lot.

The Parking and Transportation Office is located in Shriver Hall, Homewood campus, and can be contacted at parking@jhu.edu or 410-516-PARK.

Hopkins 4K for Cancer cyclists head out on 4,000-mile journey

In May 2002, 18 Johns Hopkins students jumped on their bicycles in Baltimore to pedal across America to raise money for cancer research and awareness for the disease's prevention. Their journey, dubbed Hopkins 4K for Cancer, has become an annual tradition, so far bringing in $276,000 through donations and sale of Hopkins 4K merchandise.

This year's group of 20 riders set off from Homewood's Shriver Hall at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 28, heading first to the Inner Harbor to ceremoniously dip their bikes' back tires in the water before embarking on their 4,000-mile coast-to-coast trip. The journey is scheduled to end on July 30 at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Upon their arrival on the West Coast, the students will dip their bikes' front tires in the water.

To date, this year's fundraising effort has netted more than $70,000 for the American Cancer Society's Hope Lodge, a residence for out-of-town cancer patients seeking treatment at Baltimore hospitals.

Former School of Nursing dean to join Emory faculty

Sue K. Donaldson, professor and former dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, has been named an Emory University Distinguished Professor of Nursing and Interdisciplinary Science, with a primary tenured appointment in the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing and a secondary appointment with a research laboratory in the Department of Physiology, School of Medicine. Her appointment begins July 1.

On announcing her appointment and subsequent departure, Donaldson wrote to friends and colleagues at the JHU School of Nursing, "I am thrilled to have this opportunity to join such a distinguished institution and faculty. ... I will be facilitating and developing interdisciplinary science programs across university divisions as well as heading up the initiative entitled 'Transforming Nursing's Engagement in Science' specifically for the NHWSoN."

Donaldson was the second dean of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, serving from 1994 to 2001. In the press release announcing her decision to step down from that post, it was noted that among her accomplishments was the creation of the infrastructure needed to support the developing research program of the faculty and the implementation of the school's first doctoral programs.
