New ESL Courses

Two courses — Effective Presentations and Advanced Academic and Professional Writing — have been added to the spring English as a Second Language schedule. Effective Presentations is the third in the sequence of Intermediate and Advanced Listening/Speaking courses already offered. In this new, high-advanced course, students will perfect their language skills to lead and manage discussions, argue effectively and make formal presentations in demanding professional and university environments. Readings and video encourage thoughtful analysis and expand the students' cultural awareness. Formal presentations are videotaped for review. Language lab practice is available. The prerequisite is 492.072 or an appropriate score on the placement exam given on the first night of class.

Students in Advanced Academic and Professional Writing will read and analyze the content, structure and style of a wide range of professional and academic writing in order to prepare their own articles, reports, critiques and proposals. Through peer review and revision, students produce a portfolio of carefully written professional and academic papers. Optional language lab practice is available. The prerequisite is 492.077 or an appropriate score on the placement exam given on the first night of class.

Registration continues through Jan. 18. Tuition is $795 per course; JHU employees and their spouses are eligible for tuition remission through their Benefits Office. To download a registration/application form, go to www.jhu.edu/ltc/esl. For more information, call the ESL Office at 410-516-5431 or e-mail esl@jhu.edu.
