Students in the new Our Lady of Lavang Boarding House
in Saigon now gather with their books and homework
assignments in the Linda Phy Quyen Trinh Memorial Study
Hall, built under the auspices of the nonprofit Vietnam
Dream for Success in Washington, D.C. Dedicated on Dec. 26,
the facility was created to provide room and board, along
with tuition, for female college students from poor
families in Vietnam and assist them in completing their
degrees.
Trinh, a Johns Hopkins senior who was murdered two
years ago today, was the daughter of Vietnamese immigrants.
A biomedical
engineering major, she spent the summer before her
senior year in Vietnam observing public health issues
regarding breast cancer and volunteering at an AIDS hospice
in Ho Chi Minh City.
Sister Cecilia Nguyen, the founder and president of
Vietnam Dream for Success, was a doctoral student at
Catholic University in Washington at the time of Trinh's
death and is a friend of her family. "Linda's smiling
picture in the Linda Phi Quyen Trinh Memorial Study Hall
stands as a reminder to our students of Linda's life as a
role model to follow," she said. "I often remind the
students to ask Linda to pray for them from heaven, that
they will be able to pursue Linda's unfulfilled dream of
becoming a medical researcher."
Although the boarding house is complete, financial
assistance is needed to provide for the students' expenses,
Sister Nguyen said. To learn more about the project, go to
