Northrop Grumman Head to Give Blumenthal Lecture,
Receive Award

Ronald D. Sugar, chairman and chief executive officer
of Northrop Grumman Corp., will be the
honored guest and speaker on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at a
technology management lecture and award
program established by a Johns Hopkins graduate and his
wife.
This year's Sydney and Mitzi Blumenthal Lecture and
Award for Contributions to Management in
Technology program will be held at 2 p.m. in the Main
Auditorium, room B12, of the Computational
Science and Engineering Building on the Homewood campus.
In his lecture, titled "Defining the Future," Sugar
will discuss the vision and foresight needed
to exploit technology to its best advantage. He will talk
about engineering trends and capabilities
currently under development, as well as their implications
for the future.
Sugar is a member of the National Academy of
Engineering, a fellow of the American Institute
of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a fellow of the Royal
Aeronautical Society. He joined Northrop
Grumman following its 2001 acquisition of Litton
Industries, where he had served as president and
chief operating officer. Today, Northrop Grumman employs
120,000 people in all 50 states and in 25
countries.
Prior to Sugar's lecture, President William R. Brody
and Mitzi Blumenthal are scheduled to
present remarks. Nicholas P. Jones, dean of the Whiting School,
will introduce the speaker and
present the award. After the program, a reception will be
held in the lobby.
Sydney Blumenthal, who died in 1999, earned an electrical engineering
degree at Johns Hopkins
in 1937 and went on to become chairman of the
Blumenthal-Khan Electrical Limited Partnerships, a
contracting company based in Owings Mills. In 1993, he and
his wife endowed the award and lecture to
enrich the educational experience at Johns Hopkins. The
lecture allows students to hear distinguished
speakers talk about such topics as business management,
entrepreneurship, law and ethics, and how
these topics apply to engineering and technology.
