Charles Commons recognized by homebuilders organization

The National Association of Homebuilders has honored Charles Commons with a 2007 Pillars of the Industry Award. Johns Hopkins' new residential, dining and retail complex in Charles Village was named the Best Student Housing Apartment Rental Community of the Year at the organization's Pillars Award Gala held April 12 in Hollywood, Fla. The finalists in 31 categories were selected by a panel of judges known for their industry expertise in multifamily housing design, development and marketing.

 

Jayne Miller of WBAL to speak at Women's Network luncheon

Jayne Miller, I-Team chief investigative reporter for WBAL-TV, will be the guest speaker at the 20th annual Johns Hopkins University Women's Network Spring Luncheon, which will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 11, at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel. The cost is $15, and transportation will be provided from the APL, Bayview, Homewood and JHMI campuses.

The event highlights the women's network's 20th year of dedication and leadership in promoting the advancement of women within Johns Hopkins, and the 2007 Women's Leadership Award will be presented to an honoree from each chapter.

Biomedical Career Fair draws more than 400 attendees

The third annual Biomedical Career Fair, held April 25 on the School of Medicine's Turner Concourse, drew more than 400 attendees, a significant increase over last year. The four-hour event, sponsored by the JHMI Professional Development Office, was open to all JHMI graduate students, postdocs, faculty and staff.

Among the 21 exhibitors were agencies of the National Institutes of Health, the FBI, Lockheed Martin, Booz Allen Hamilton, McKinsey & Co., APL and Johns Hopkins Technology Transfer.

Several vendors told the organizers that they had returned as a result of hiring candidates from last year's fair, and many noted that they expected this year's contacts to result in hires as well.

 

Diversity Recognition Awards to be given on Wednesday

President Brody and the Diversity Leadership Council of the Johns Hopkins Institutions will recognize recipients of the 2007 Diversity Recognition Awards on Wednesday, May 2, at Homewood.

Individual awards will be presented to Marlon Caballero, School of Nursing; Dana Boatman, Andrew P. Feinberg, Linda P. Fried, Joao Lima, Dong Shen, Patrick C. Walsh and Levi Watkins Jr., School of Medicine; Erin Fitzgerald, Whiting School of Engineering; Robert Holder III, Applied Physics Laboratory; and Christopher Sogge, Krieger School of Arts and Sciences.

Receiving group awards will be the African Diaspora Association at SAIS, represented by Kawaun Sankar, Salah Goss, Nikki Duncan, Charlene Taylor, Catherine Hendrix, Acquania Gibbs, Asha Munroe, Omoneka Musa, Jennifer Eaglin and Mame Soce Sene; and the Asian Heritage Club at APL, represented by Lien T. Duong and Lan D. Afram.

The Diversity Recognition Award, first presented by the DLC in 2003, acknowledges outstanding accomplishments of faculty, staff and students whose demonstrable efforts foster greater appreciation, advancement and celebration of diversity and inclusiveness in the Johns Hopkins culture and environment.

The event will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in the Second Decade Society Room in the Mattin Center's Ross Jones Building.

 

Deutsche Bank CEO Josef Ackermann to speak at SAIS

Josef Ackermann, chief executive officer of Deutsche Bank, will give a talk this week at SAIS titled "Emerging Markets and the Global Financial System: The View of the International Financial Industry."

The session, which is part of the W.P. Carey Global Leader Lecture Series, will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2, in the Nitze Building's Kenney Auditorium. Non-SAIS affiliates should RSVP to SAISevents@jhu.edu or 202-663-5636.

 

JHU writers to appear at Baltimore's annual Flowermart

Johns Hopkins authors will appear in the Author's Niche at Baltimore's Flowermart between noon and 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, in Mount Vernon Square. On hand will be Writing Seminars professors Jean McGarry and John Astin, alumna and poet Lizzy Skurnick and physician Peter E. Dans.

They will be joined in the Author's Niche by cookbook author Kerry Dunnington, demonstrating recipes from This Book Cooks, and motivational author Pat Bender, of Pillars of Success. Also appearing at the Author's Niche will be Gil Sandler, Rev. Luther Starnes, Sherry Welch and others.

Astin also will be judging the Flowermart Super Star Contest from 1 to 2 p.m. on Stage B.

Procter & Gamble, CCP sign second memo of understanding

The Bloomberg School of Public Health's Center for Communication Programs and Procter & Gamble have signed their second five-year global memorandum of understanding. The two institutions will combine their expertise to pursue innovative partnerships that will improve and sustain health and well-being in households around the world. Over the last five years, CCP and P&G collaborated on research and programs promoting safe water, adolescent and reproductive health, and healthy lifestyles in Egypt, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Haiti, Indonesia and Pakistan.

Participating in the signing were Michael Klag, dean of the Bloomberg School; Nancy Eddy, manager of research and development, Global Personal Health, for Procter & Gamble; Jane Bertrand, director of CCP; David Holtgrave, chair of Health, Behavior and Society; and Gary Saffitz, deputy director of CCP.

 

JHPIEGO participates in Africa Malaria Day observances

JHPIEGO commemorated Africa Malaria Day by participating in national observances held April 25 in Washington, D.C., and Africa. The annual event exhibits solidarity with African countries battling the disease that affects 500 million people a year worldwide and leads to one million deaths, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa. Currently, JHPIEGO works in 12 African countries with endemic malaria, with a special focus on interventions to prevent malaria in pregnancy and to manage the disease.

In addition, JHPIEGO works with the Roll Back Malaria Partnership, which was launched in 1998 by the World Health Organization, UNICEF, the United Nations Development Programme and the World Bank to provide a coordinated global approach to fighting malaria. The partnership's goal is to halve the global burden of malaria by 2010.
