Scott Metcalfe, chair of the Music Production and
Technology program at the
University of
Hartford's Hartt School of Music since 1999, has been named
director of
Peabody's
Recording Arts and Sciences program, effective July 1, 2009. A Hartt
graduate in composition,
Metcalfe has taught
at the school since 1996 and is currently an assistant
professor. He has also
taught graduate courses
in New York University's Tonmeister program and the Yale
School of Drama's Theatrical Sound Design program.
With his company, Mind's Ear, Metcalfe has engineered
hundreds of
recordings in many musical
genres, including broadcast recordings of Hartford Symphony
Orchestra and
Connecticut Opera
performances. Among the artists he has recorded are Yo-Yo
Ma, Renee Fleming,
Sarah Chang and Dave
Brubeck. His work has been released internationally on
numerous independent
labels, broadcast
nationally on National Public Radio and the CBS Radio
Network and heard on radio
broadcasts
throughout Europe.
"Scott Metcalfe's experience as a recording engineer,
producer, composer
and teacher qualifies
him superbly to lead Recording Arts and Sciences at
Peabody," said Mellasenah
Morris, dean of the
Conservatory and deputy director of the institute. "We look
forward to his
active involvement in
recruiting activities and interviews for next fall's
entering class."
Peabody's bachelor of music in performance and
recording arts and sciences
is a five-year
double-degree program offered in conjunction with the
Whiting School of
Engineering. The curriculum
has three main components: music performance, recording
technology, and related
math, science and
engineering courses. Peabody also offers a master of arts
degree in audio
sciences. There are four
recording studios at the Mount Vernon campus.
