A round of information sessions on JHU's Tuition Remission,
Tuition Grant and new Tuition
Reimbursement for Undergraduate Studies programs has been
planned by the Office of Human
Resources to provide employees with timely
opportunities to develop a full understanding of JHU's
education assistance program. The sessions, the first of
which is scheduled for May 15, will cover
current policies and procedures, and changes for the coming
year, in the three programs.
The Tuition Grant Plan pays (up to one-half of the
Johns Hopkins freshman undergraduate
tuition) for dependent children's full-time undergraduate
studies at degree-granting, accredited
institutions. To participate, employees must complete two
years of full-time JHU employment by Oct.
1 for fall participation, and Feb. 1 for spring
participation; continue in a benefits-eligible position;
and
claim on their tax return the child they wish to
participate in the program. The age cutoff for
dependent children is 23. Effective academic year
2008-2009, dependent children will not be eligible
to participate in the program during any semester of the
calendar year in which they turn 24.
Tuition Remission pays for part-time course work
pursued in Johns Hopkins' academic divisions.
Courses must be offered through the divisions' continuing
education unit. Tuition remission used within
the schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering may be
used only within Advanced Academic
Programs and Engineering and Applied Science Programs for
Professionals. Departmental workshops
are not covered. The remission program covers both credit
and noncredit courses, generally 100
percent (not to exceed $5,250 for credit course work) of
tuition costs for employees, and is also
available to family members. The age cutoff for dependent
children is 23. Effective academic year
2008-2009, dependent children will not be eligible to
participate in the program during any semester
of the calendar year in which they turn 24.
Tuition Reimbursement for Undergraduate Studies, a
new plan effective July 1, covers full-time
benefits-eligible employees' outside part-time
undergraduate course work (paid for out-of-pocket).
Participating employees receive 100 percent reimbursement
of tuition costs (up to $2,000 per
calendar year) for courses they pass with a grade of C or
better. Proof of payment and successful
course completion are required for reimbursement. Family
members, fees, noncredit courses and
graduate studies are not covered.
Staff members may participate at the same time in the
Tuition Reimbursement Program for
Undergraduate Studies (for outside courses) and the Tuition
Remission Plan (for JHU courses). The
combined calendar year dollar limit for employees and their
dependents across the two education
programs is $5,250. Employees who want to participate in
both programs must stay within the $2,000
spending limit for tuition reimbursement for undergraduate
studies and not exceed the $5,250 limit
across the two programs.
The session on Thursday, May 15, is scheduled for 9 to
10:30 a.m. at Johns Hopkins @ Eastern,
suite B-102. Employees who wish to reserve a seat are asked
to e-mail
TrainingEdMail@jhuadig.admin.jhu.edu or acwilson@jhu.edu.
Employees also may e-mail specific session
questions. All e-mails received will be responded to within
48 hours.
