Pres. Brody to receive honorary degree from Koc University

President William R. Brody will give the keynote address and receive an honorary doctor of science degree from Koc University in Istanbul, Turkey, at its commencement ceremonies on June 14. Following the ceremony, a dinner will be held in his honor at the president's house.

Koc University was started in 1993 by funds from the Koc Family Foundation and currently has about 3,200 undergraduates and 400 graduate students. Its mission statement says, "Koc University's research will contribute to advance universal knowledge and influence the intellectual, technological, economic and social developments in Turkey."

 

Poster submissions now being sought for NanoBio Symposium

The Institute for NanoBioTechnology is now considering poster submissions for its second annual NanoBio Symposium, May 1 and 2, at the School of Medicine. Attendees will learn about recent scientific research from both Johns Hopkins and international experts using nanoscale solutions to solve problems in health care and medicine.

The event is free for JHU-affiliated faculty, staff, students and postdoctoral fellows, but registration is required. Poster titles and abstracts must be submitted by Thursday, April 17. The deadline for registering without a poster is Thursday, April 24.

Family activities scheduled for Friday at Homewood Museum

Friday, March 21, is Family Day at Homewood Museum. At 12:30 and 2 p.m., children ages 5 to 13 and their parents or grandparents can enjoy classic children's stories, traditional games, hand-cut silhouette portraits, and tea and cookies. The event is offered in conjunction with the Welcome Little Stranger focus show. Activities are free with museum admission, but reservations are required; call 410-516-5589.

 

Info sessions on education assistance program planned

A round of information sessions on JHU's Tuition Remission, Tuition Grant and Tuition Reimbursement for Undergraduate Studies plans will be available for employees to attend beginning May 15. The sessions are designed to provide employees with timely opportunities to develop a full understanding of JHU's education assistance program.

Topics will include current policies and procedures and program changes for the coming year. The May 15 session will take place from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Johns Hopkins@Eastern, suite B-102. Employees who wish to reserve a seat in this session are asked to send an e-mail to TrainingEdMail@jhuadig.admin.jhu.edu or acwilson@jhu.edu to signal their intention to attend; they also may e-mail specific session questions. All e-mails received will be responded to within 48 hours. The tuition remission plan application currently is available at hrnt.jhu.edu/benefits/EduBenefits/ tuitionRemission.cfm.

The 2008-2009 Tuition Grant Plan application will be available beginning May 8 at training.jhu.edu/html/EducationalAssistance/forms/ tuitiongrantform.pdf.

The new reimbursement form will be available beginning July 1 on the Benefits Education Assistance program Web site hrnt.jhu.edu/benefits/EduBenefits/home.cfm.

 

Hopkins Children's honors Children and Healthcare Week

Johns Hopkins Children's Center will pay tribute to national Children and Healthcare Week, March 17 to 21, by sponsoring educational and recreational activities that recognize the needs of children and their families during their hospital stays.

Events include educational opportunities for caregivers and fun activities for the kids, including the annual Wheelchair Races, to be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 18, in the Meyer Gym.

Decker Gardens to be filled with Easter eggs this weekend

The Johns Hopkins International Society will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt (complete with the Easter bunny) at Homewood's Decker Gardens on Saturday, March 22. The hunt begins at 10 a.m., and after everyone's bags and baskets are full of eggs, the participants will be able to play egg toss, egg carry and other games.

 

Astral Winds quintet to perform in 'Music at Evergreen' series

The 55th anniversary season of Evergreen Museum & Library's Music at Evergreen concert series continues on Friday, March 21, with the Astral Winds woodwind quintet at 8 p.m. in the Carriage House. The ensemble will perform works by Maurice Ravel, Jennifer Higdon, Malcolm Arnold and Carl Nielsen, and a meet-the-artists reception will follow. Concert details are online at www.museums.jhu.edu.
