School of Education Launches Neuro-Education Initiative

On Thursday, June 5, the School of Education will host the first activity of the Neuro- Education Initiative, the Learning Lunch series.

The Neuro-Education Initiative is an interdisciplinary program in collaboration with JHM's Brain Science Institute. Its goal is to bring together scientists, educators and other stakeholders to explore the intersections, knowledge and interdisciplinary research opportunities in the fields of cognitive/brain sciences and education.

The June 5 Learning Lunch panel will be Amy Bastian, a neuroscientist at the School of Medicine, who will discuss learning and the motor system; Steve Hsiao, of the Krieger Mind/Brain Institute, who will share his work on attention and plasticity; and Laurie Cutting, of the Kennedy Krieger Institute, who will discuss the cognitive and neurobiological correlates of reading and reading disabilities. Each will present current research, and a moderated discussion will address how it might be expanded and applied in educational settings.

The event will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in Room 219 of the Education Building. Lunch will be provided. To attend, RSVP to mclean@jhu.edu by June 1.

Mariale Hardiman, chair of Interdisciplinary Studies in the School of Education, and Susan Magsamen, noted writer and editor of educational materials for children and families, and a faculty associate in the school, developed the Neuro-Education Initiative at Johns Hopkins with a seed grant from the Walt Disney Co.

The initiative will host a professional development speakers series in September.

To learn more about the Neuro-Education Initiative, contact Hardiman at mmhardiman@jhu.edu or Magsamen at smagsam1@jhu.edu.
