Update From the Office of the Vice Provost for Research: Funding Opportunities in the Stimulus Package

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, more popularly known as the Economic Stimulus Package, will invest approximately $12.4 billion in extramural research between now and September 2010 for the purpose of stimulating the economy and, in particular, retaining old and creating new jobs. If past trends hold, Johns Hopkins faculty could experience a 20 percent to 30 percent increase in research funding, but only in this time frame.

Working with the Office of Government, Community and Public Affairs, the Office of the Vice Provost for Research is monitoring news about funding opportunities and posting what it learns at: jhuresearch.jhu.edu/econstim.htm. Check often as the page will be updated whenever news breaks.

Here is a brief summary of what JHU faculty can do to be ready:

1. Current PIs: Prepare supplements to your existing grants and contact your program officer for details. ARRA funds need to be spent before September 2010. Be sure current progress reports are up-to-date to be eligible for stimulus funding.

2. Recent near misses: For faculty who have had grant applications well scored but not funded, revise the aims and budget of the project so that it can be completed by September 2010.

3. Equipment and shared instrumentation grants: The next NIH deadline is March 23. Visit: grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-09-028.html for details. Inform your vice dean for research of your plans because they may need to be coordinated with other similar JHU proposals.

For questions or information, contact Barbara Christen, assistant provost, Office of Research Administration, at 410-516-5256 or bchris15@jhu.edu.
