On Monday, March 2, his first official day as Johns
Hopkins University president, Ron Daniels
stepped onto a snow-blanketed Homewood campus. When he
arrived at Garland Hall, home of the
President's Office, his new staff was on hand to welcome
him — along with a Blue Jay-blue welcome sign
and some JHU-inspired good luck fortune cookies. (Sample
message for the Canadian-born Daniels:
"Blue Jays will once again play a prominent role in your
future.") Daniels quickly assured staff members
that he "did not bring the snow with [him]."
After some housekeeping in his office, Daniels
ventured back out into the elements with his
executive assistant, Jerry Schnydman. On his inaugural trek
across campus, the university's new
president was stopped by a number of students who wanted to
shake hands and say hello. A few even
joined Daniels and Schnydman's stroll to extend the
chat.
Daniels lunched with undergraduates at Fresh Food
Café, the dining facility for the freshman
residence halls. Afterward, he returned to Garland Hall for
a string of one-on-one meetings with key
staff members and took well-wishing calls from board of
trustees chair Pamela Flaherty and former
President Bill Brody, among others. The president ended the
day dining with his cabinet — the senior
administrators of the university — at his Nichols
House residence.
