Hopkins Biotech Network Holds International Biotech Conference

Aris Melissaratos, senior adviser to the president at Johns Hopkins, greets Jose M. Fernandez, president and CEO of Zeltia, one of the largest public biopharmas in Spain; and Montserrat Capdevila, president of the Hopkins Biotech Network. Zeltia focuses its pipeline on therapeutic products targeted to cancer and degenerative central nervous system disorders.

On May 14, more than 100 people attended BioEspana, the first day of the Hopkins Biotech Network's International Biotech Conference. Held at the university's Montgomery County Campus, BioEspana focused on increasing awareness of what Spanish biotechnology companies have to offer, opening the door for alliances and partnerships between companies in Maryland and Spain.

Speakers included Aris Melissaratos, senior adviser to the president at Johns Hopkins; Sean Darragh, executive vice president, international, of Biotechnology Industry Organization; and Montserrat Vendrell, CEO of BioCat.

Officials in attendance included Montgomery County executive Isiah "Ike" Leggett; state Delegate Brian J. Feldman; and Steve Silverman, director of the Montgomery County Department of Economic Development.

For the conference's second day, participants traveled to the Center of Marine Biotechnology in Baltimore to focus on "Blue Biotech: An Ocean of Possibilities."
