Honors, awards
and appointments

Homewood Student Affairs

Senior first-team All-America defenseman Brian Kuczman was named Most Outstanding Senior and Most Outstanding Defenseman at the 1997 Men's Lacrosse Team awards banquet. He was also elected to the William T. Schmeisser All-Time Johns Hopkins Team, becoming only the fourth JHU player in the 1990s and 114th overall to be so honored.

Medicine

Among recipients of the 1997 Distinguished Medical Alumnus Awards presented at the biennial meeting of the Hopkins Medical and Surgical Association were faculty members Richard Johns, Distinguished Service Professor of Biomedical Engineering and professor of medicine; Daniel Nathans, University Professor of Molecular Biology and Genetics; and Edyth Schoenrich, director of Part-Time Professional Programs and professor of health policy and management in the School of Public Health, with a joint appointment in Medicine.

Gloria Bryan, senior director of Human Resources at the School of Medicine, has been named to the board of directors of the Chesapeake Human Resources Association, the regional professional association for human resources professionals. She also chairs the group's diversity committee.

David Cromwell, instructor in internal medicine and gastroenterology, has been awarded a one-year grant from the Glaxo-Wellcome Institute for Digestive Health to pursue his research on factors affecting Medicaid patients with peptic ulcer disease.

Bert Vogelstein, Clayton Professor of Oncology, has received the 1997 Janssen Award for Special Achievement in Gastroenterology. The award is given in recognition of his unique and far-reaching contributions to gastroenterology, which have illuminated understanding of the genetics of colon cancer.

Edward Wallach, J. Donald Woodruff Professor of Gynecology, has been invited to deliver the 25th S. Leon Israel Memorial Lecture at Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia.

Changing places,
new faces

Laura Donnelly has been appointed director of financial aid in the School of Continuing Studies.

Jairo Garcia, an expert in infertility and reproductive technologies, has been appointed associate professor of gynecology and obstetrics and director of the in vitro fertilization program.

Jonathan Jarow, an internationally recognized expert in male infertility and sexual dysfunction, has joined the staff of the Brady Urological Institute as an associate professor of urology.

John Stobo has been appointed vice dean for research and technology in the School of Medicine, focusing not only on research as it is conducted today, but also positioning Hopkins for the future. In addition to his duties as vice dean, he will remain chairman of the board of Johns Hopkins Health Care and will continue to be involved in planned affiliations with Suburban Hospital and with Kent and Queen Anne's.
