University Calendar for 1995-96 and 1996-97


     The key dates for the university-wide calendarfor 1995-96
and 1996-97 are listed below.

     The calendar permits divisions to operate on either the
semester or quarter basis while synchronizing the schedules for
the benefit of interdivisional registrants. Instructional periods
of one hour will begin on the half-hour in East Baltimore and
Peabody and on the hour in Arts & Sciences and Engineering to
allow time for transportation between campuses.

     Please note that, due to differing requirements of the
academic divisions, there are some deviations to the following
calendar, especially in regard to registration dates. Variations
to the calendar are published each year by and are available from
the academic divisions.

     Also, since the schools of Medicine and of Hygiene and
Public Health operate on a quarter system, their published
academic calendars should be used to determine the course
starting dates for the second (November), third (January) and
fourth (March) quarters. Consequently, dates for these quarters
are not listed in the calendars presented below.

1995-96 Calendar
-----------------

Sept. 5, 6:    Registration 

Sept. 7:       
     Instruction begins for first quarter/semester for all
divisions, except Hygiene and Public Health, whose first day of
instruction is Sept. 8.

November       
     Instruction begins for second quarter courses (Medicine and
Public Health)

Nov. 23, 24:   Thanksgiving holidays

Dec. 23-Jan. 2:               
     Winter recess for all divisions except Hygiene and Public
Health, whose winter recess begins Dec. 21.

Jan. 3:
     The intersession period, second semester registration and
first day of classes for the second semester vary for the schools
of Arts and Sciences, Engineering, Continuing Studies, Nursing
and SAIS.

     The divisions will publish and distribute their schedules
for these dates separately. For cross-registration and other
scheduling purposes, each division should ensure that faculty,
students and appropriate staff are informed of the divisional
intersession period calendars.

Jan. 15:  Observance of Martin Luther King's birthday

January             
     Instruction begins for third quarter courses (Medicine and
Public Health)

Feb. 19:  Observance of                 
          Presidents' Day

March 18-22:
     Spring vacation, all divisions, except Continuing Studies

March     
     Instruction begins for fourth quarter.

May 22:   Commencement
