Carl P. Swanson, a developmental biologist and dean who left Hopkins in 1971 to work at the University of Massachusetts, died on Tuesday, Sept. 24, of complications from pulmonary fibrosis. He was 85.

Swanson was a Hopkins faculty member in the Department of Biology from 1946 to 1971. He specialized in cell biology and genetics and had conducted research dealing with the effects of radiation on genes. He was dean of undergraduate studies for four years, stepping down from that post shortly before leaving for UMass, where he was a botany professor from 1971 until his retirement in 1981.

A memorial service has been tentatively planned for November at the University of Massachusetts campus. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, a son, Michael W. Swanson, a daughter, Ann S. Stern, and four grandchildren.
